Carbon Farming CE

Project overview

Development of Carbon Farming in the Central Europe

Carbon farming is the process of changing agricultural practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil, or to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. It has huge potential but is still underused in central Europe. The Carbon Farming – CE project wants to change this and make regions more familiar with the concept. The partnership adapts and tests various techniques and business models and develops a monitoring tool for transnational, standardised carbon sequestration.

Roadmap

1

Challenge

Embarking on the journey towards climate neutrality, our challenge lies in the innovative transformation of agriculture. Our mission is to contribute significantly by developing unique solutions for capturing CO2 from the air and seamlessly deploying it into the soil. The focal point of this challenge involves introducing and fostering the widespread adoption of "carbon farming" practices, crafting a dynamic business model, implementing effective monitoring solutions, and formulating policies dedicated to storing Greenhouse Gases (GHG) as soil organic carbon (SOC).

2

Testing carbon farming techniques

We will test 6 different carbon farming techniques in 9 CE countries and develop a transnational guide for carbon farming techniques as a solution for mainstreaming for 45 farmers.

3

Testing of carbon farming business models

Evaluation of 5 types of carbon farming business models in the 9 Central European countries. Using the test results to develop transnational practices for carbon farming business models and upscaling of successful models.

4

Carbon farming mainstreaming

Develop a standardized monitoring methodology for carbon sequestration and measures to promote carbon farming policies to achieve broad acceptance and implementation.

Outputs

Pilot testing carbon farming techniques

Carbon farming techniques were tested over two consecutive summer growing seasons by project partners across nine Central European countries. In total, 36 field trials covering seven different carbon farming techniques were carried out, generating valuable practical experience under diverse climatic and farming conditions. The testing activities were complemented by transnational peer learning, stakeholder feedback, SWOT analyses, and an assessment of the environmental, economic, and practical implications of each technique. Based on the results, the tested techniques were evaluated and ranked according to their carbon sequestration potential, feasibility, and acceptance. The main output of this activity is the Transnational Test Report, available below, which summarizes the trial results, lessons learned, and recommendations for the wider adoption of carbon farming practices.

CE guide for carbon farming techniques to minimize CO₂ and improve soil quality

Based on the testing and evaluation of carbon farming techniques, the most promising approaches were compiled into the “CE Guide for Carbon Farming Techniques”. The guide provides practical, step-by-step instructions for the implementation of carbon farming practices under Central European conditions and is intended for use by farmers and agricultural advisors. The guide includes detailed descriptions of selected carbon farming techniques, implementation recommendations, expected benefits, and practical guidance for adoption. To support knowledge transfer and capacity building, accompanying presentation materials were also developed for agricultural advisors and extension services.

TESTING CARBON FARMING BUSINESS MODELS

Pilot testing carbon farming business models

Carbon farming business models were tested across five different stakeholder groups and evaluated through a transnational peer review process involving experts from participating countries. The testing generated valuable insights into the environmental, social, and economic aspects of carbon farming business models and their applicability in different regional contexts. The findings served as the basis for the development of the Carbon Farming Business Model Procedures, providing recommendations and transnational guidelines for the design and implementation of sustainable carbon farming business models.

Carbon farming business model procedures

The Carbon Farming Business Model Procedures were developed as a practical framework to support farmers, agricultural advisors, and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of carbon farming business models. Structured as a clear step-by-step guide, the procedures incorporate a sustainability verification model, a simplified assessment of carbon sequestration potential, and a socio-economic impact framework. Building on the results of transnational testing and peer review activities, the procedures provide recommendations for developing viable and sustainable carbon farming business models. The output was designed to support national upscaling and transnational transferability, facilitating the wider adoption of carbon farming practices across Central Europe and beyond.

Strategy and action plan for mainstreaming of carbon farming

The Carbon Farming Strategy and Action Plan were developed to support the long-term uptake of carbon farming practices across Central Europe. The Strategy defines a shared vision for the development and promotion of carbon farming, while the Action Plan provides practical guidance for agricultural advisors and other stakeholders on the implementation of carbon farming services. The Action Plan includes recommendations on service development, implementation timelines, financing opportunities, expected benefits, monitoring approaches, sustainability indicators, and carbon sequestration assessment methods. Together, the two documents provide a framework for scaling up project results, supporting policy uptake, and strengthening the role of carbon farming as an important contribution of the agricultural sector to climate change mitigation.
