Project overview
Climate Resilient Communities of Central Europe
Resilience to climate change can only be achieved when you look at all parts of the puzzle. Cross-sectoral approaches are needed but silo-thinking is still hard to overcome in central Europe. The MISSION CE CLIMATE project helped regions to better coordinate their responses to climate change. The partners activated citizens in pilot regions to contribute to newly introduced community climate missions and developed a climate resilience strategy 2030 including locally adapted action plans.

About the project
Resilience to climate change required coordinated action across sectors, institutions and communities. MISSION CE CLIMATE helped regions in Central Europe align their responses to climate impacts. Project partners activated citizens in pilot regions, introduced Community Climate Resilience Missions and developed a joint 2030 Climate Resilience Strategy with locally adapted action plans and practical solutions.
Central Europe faced many climate change challenges, including heat, drought, heavy precipitation and pressure on local water systems. MISSION CE CLIMATE addressed fragmented, sector-based responses by introducing a coordinated, cross-sectoral approach that placed local and regional authorities at the centre of climate resilience governance.
The project supported communities across Central Europe in improving their ability to prepare for and respond to climate impacts. It built sustainable Community Climate Resilience Missions, strengthened local capacities and delivered an integrated strategy, local action plans, tools, training and pilot solutions. The approach was inspired by the European Commission’s Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
The project achieved four main results:
- Climate resilience systems were established in partner communities through Community Climate Resilience Missions, supported by a joint 2030 Climate Resilience Strategy and locally tailored action plans.
- Local and regional capacities to adapt to climate change were strengthened through new skills, tools, training and practical guidance.
- Citizens were activated and supported to contribute to community climate resilience through awareness-raising, participation and capacity-building activities.
- Pilot solutions were developed and tested to respond to local adaptation challenges in partner territories.
