Project overview

Restoring degraded eco-systems along the Green Belt to improve and enhance biodiversity and ecological connectivity

The European Green Belt is a unique network of ecologically important habitats and protected nature areas. Crossing countries along the line of the former Iron Curtain, it is under pressure: growing land use is leading to biodiversity and habitat degradation. The ReCo project pilots a new protection and conservation strategy by capitalising on geo-information and data processing systems. The partnership also adopts a community-based development approach to leverage funds and activities.

Roadmap

1

Nature restoration alongside European Green Belt

Interreg CE ReCo Project Roadmap 1
CR Tina Kocjancic

The European Green Belt – a nature boarder, that spreads alongside the past Iron curtain – is in very much need for restoration. To help that, 12 project partners from six member states in Central Europe unite and work on the implementation of versatile restoration measures and – since nature does not know the boarders – support of the interconnectivity in this part of Europe in terms of the nature protection.

2

Decline of biodiversity and degraded habitats in need for support

Interreg CE ReCo Project Roadmap 2
CR Tina Kocjancic

The European Green Belt forms a structurally rich bridge element connecting various valuable habitat types, which are natural home for a wide range of plant and animal species and of great importance in the role of natural carbon sinks for the climate protection. However, due to increasing land use pressure, habitat fragmentation, and climate change this unique network is under threat. Decline in biodiversity and habitat degradation are only some of the consequences of those challenging developments.

3

Development approach based on innovation and community

Interreg CE ReCo Project Roadmap 3
CR Sonia Pytkowska

In response, the ReCo aims to provide solutions to improve the protection and conservation of habitats along the EGB CE. As up to date measures are needed, the project will employ innovative geo-information and data processing systems to devise solutions. The partnership also adopts a community-based developpment approach, encouraging communities to contribute fund and activities towards habitat restoration.

4

Practical implementation of restoration measures

Interreg CE ReCo Project Roadmap 4
CR Martin Kuba

Furthermore, to test or demonstrate up to date ecological restoration approaches, enhance ecological interconnectivity, and protect biodiversity, project partners implement two Joint Pilot Actions in six regions, that are facing specific ecological challenges. Their goal is to target valuble habbitats and species (including NATURA 2000). In order to maximise community-based leverage effects restoration investments will be accompanied by a series of local stakeholder workshops in pilot regions.

5

Political mainstreaming and upscaling of achieved results

Interreg CE ReCo Project Roadmap 5 (2)
CR Florian Danzinger

Observations learnt through the implementation of pilot actions will be integrated into key outcomes of the project, that include: Joint Transnational Restoration & Connectivity Strategy presenting how, where and under which focus EGB CE may contribute best to the achievement of national and European nature protection goals, creation of two Joint Practitioners’ Guides to aid in the future implementation of restoration efforts as well as the development of six Joint Local/Regional Restoration Plans embarking on how to put into practice on the local/regional level findings of the project. To ensure roll-out of the project results on national but especially EU level, the project outputs and results will be mainstreamed into political work by presenting EGB as priority region for the implementation of EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030.

Joint Pilot action 1 “Habitats” implemented in 4 ReCo pilot regions

Fundamental improvements of habitat quality were possible by implementing the ReCo pilot actions on habitats. Degraded pearl mussel creeks could be brought to a much better near-natural state in Germany, the Czech Republic saw the improvement of wet meadow management pushing biodiversity and in Slovenia an already important base for breeding and migrating birds could be upgraded with further mudflats and islands. Also in Slovenia, a pilot concentrated on saving the extensive daffodil meadows, a striking and exceptional sight during bloom, for future generations - successfully, as it turned out, as management measures could be established. The revitalization of overgrown dry karstic grasslands in Italy with various species new to the area discovered during implementation complements the set of ambitious habitat restoration activities in the ReCo pilot areas.

Joint Pilot action 2 “Species” implemented in 2 ReCo pilot regions

The European bison is one of the most charismatic animals inhabiting Europe, with wild stocks being extremely rare and local today. One ReCo pilot action gathered nouveau knowledge on the animals in Poland by collaring them and collecting extensive telemetry data that is now making targeted optimization and conservation measures possible. The other pilot action on species focused on the European wildcat, an animal brought to extinction over much of its former range. Two European wildcats were released in Thayatal National Park in Austria to allow recolonization, also of neighboring Podyji National Park in Czechia, where wetland creation improved and diversified wildcat habitats.

Transnational Restoration and Connectivity Strategy for the European Green Belt

The ReCo Transnational Restoration and Connectivity Strategy for the European Green Belt in Central Europe defines concrete activities and key areas for future actions and investments to further restoration and connectivity functions in the European Green Belt. Besides defining concrete strategical actions for managing and developing the European Green Belt during the coming decade, it contains a set of carefully selected existing example activities that have already been realized. These can serve as an easy to use toolbox for future activities.

Practicioners' Guide

Practicioners' Guides on ecological habitat restoration and effective species conservation

Two Joint Practicioners' Guides on restoration activities targeted on habitats and species sum up strategical recommendations from the implementation of ReCo's pilot actions. The guides give both general and concrete recommendations on ecological restoration. They are available for download in the Media section of this web site.

Regional restoration and connectivity plans

These jointly developed regional restoration & connectivity plans identify suitable activities and areas for future restoration measures promoting connectivity of valuable habitats in the six selected sections of the Central Europe Green Belt, including adjacent valuable areas. This contributes to an improved biodiversity and ecological status of the whole area. The regional plans were endorsed by various regional stakeholders in the ReCo regions where restoration activities have been undertaken.
