Project overview

Digital transformation of long-term care facilities for older people

Society is aging fast and taking care of the elderly is becoming a challenge. Digital solutions offer support to nursing staff but the potential of digitisation is still underused. The DigiCare4CE project promoted innovative solutions that improve care quality and developed a transnational strategy for the digital transformation of care facilities. The partnership tested the deployment of new technologies in pilot actions and elaborated action plans for their broader implementation.

Roadmap

1

Our Challenge: The Aging Population and Care Crisis

As societies worldwide continue to grapple with aging populations, traditional care models have become increasingly strained. A declining number of caregivers combined with a rising number of care recipients presented a significant challenge. The project addressed the urgent need to streamline and optimize care processes to ensure the well-being of older adults and alleviate the burden on healthcare systems.

2

Specific Problem: The Digital Divide in Care

While digital technologies offer immense potential to improve care delivery, many care facilities and providers faced significant challenges in adopting and effectively utilizing these tools. A notable gap existed between the available digital solutions and their actual implementation in the care sector. This digital divide hindered the ability to optimize care processes, enhance patient outcomes, and alleviate the workload on care staff.

3

Innovative Solution: Bridging the Digital Divide

To address the challenges faced by the care sector, the project proposed and demonstrated a diverse range of digital solutions tailored to the specific needs of long-term care facilities. By showcasing practical applications of these technologies, the project aimed to inspire innovation, foster collaboration, and accelerate the digital transformation of care delivery.

4

Empowering Care Facilities with Digital Solutions

To bridge the digital divide, the project identified and curated a selection of effective digital solutions. By presenting these tools to long-term care facility managers, it supported informed decisions about adopting technologies that could streamline operations, enhance care quality, and improve the overall experience for both residents and staff.

5

Pilot Action 1: Optimizing Care Processes with Digital Tools

Business people meeting in office to discuss project

The project conducted a comprehensive pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative digital management and information systems. These tools were implemented to streamline care processes, enhance collaboration among healthcare providers, and facilitate communication with external stakeholders. By analyzing the results of this pilot, the project identified best practices and developed strategies for wider adoption.

6

Pilot Action 2: Leveraging Smart Technologies for Enhanced Care

The project explored the potential of emerging technologies through a pilot study involving smart devices, including sensors, wearables, and panic buttons. It also investigated the integration of mobile applications and virtual reality therapy into care settings. By testing these innovative solutions, the project assessed their impact on patient outcomes, staff efficiency, and overall quality of care.

7

Outcome: A Pan-European Digital Toolkit for Care

Map of Europe and hearts with flags of european countries. Travel EU concept. 3d

The project created a comprehensive, pan-European overview of digital tools that can significantly enhance care delivery. This resource serves as a guide for healthcare providers, policymakers, and technology innovators across Europe, enabling them to identify and implement effective digital solutions that address the evolving needs of ageing populations.

8

Proof and Impact: A Legacy of Innovation

To solidify its impact, the project delivered a tangible legacy, including comprehensive strategies and action plans that can be implemented across Europe. Through two pilot actions, it demonstrated the practical application of digital technologies and paved the way for further digital transformation in the care sector. By sharing its findings and best practices, the project aimed to inspire innovation and enhance the quality of care for older adults.
