New Cross-Border Bus Service Boosts Connectivity Between Gorizia and Nova Gorica
In February 2025, a new cross-border public transport service was successfully launched between Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia) within the framework of the Trans-Borders+ project.
Although a bus line between the two cities has existed since 2002, the service operated by APT Gorizia has now been completely redesigned to strengthen cross-border mobility and support the cities’ joint title of European Capital of Culture 2025.
The new E-bus line offers regular, environmentally friendly, and seamless connections between key urban centres, cultural venues, and transport hubs on both sides of the border. It directly addresses one of the main challenges identified by Trans-Borders+: improving accessibility and interoperability of regional transport systems in border areas.
Sustainable Mobility in the Spirit of European Cooperation
The launch of the service is a practical example of what transnational cooperation can achieve.
By promoting low-carbon transport solutions and encouraging a modal shift from private cars to public transit, the initiative supports both sustainability goals and broader cohesion policy objectives. The use of low-emission vehicles contributes to the priorities of a Connected Central Europe and the European Green Deal.
The service has been carefully designed to complement existing public transport systems in both countries. Harmonised timetables and integrated passenger information systems enable smooth transfers and improve digital connectivity, making it easier for both residents and visitors to navigate the cross-border region.
A Key Initiative for the European Capital of Culture 2025
The year 2025 marks a unique opportunity for Gorizia and Nova Gorica to present themselves as a unified cultural and social space.
The new bus line actively supports this ambition by enabling easy access to cultural events, facilitating daily cross-border interactions, and showcasing the practical value of European integration.
By offering a modern, attractive, and sustainable transport option, the service enhances the visibility and accessibility of both cities, strengthens local economies, and fosters greater social and cultural inclusion across the border.
Looking Ahead
The cross-border pilot bus service forms part of a broader Trans-Borders+ strategy to develop innovative mobility models that can be replicated in other Central European border regions.
Building on the success of this initiative, project partners are already working to expand services, explore further digitalisation, and implement smart mobility solutions that meet the evolving needs of citizens and visitors alike.
This pilot underscores the strong commitment of Trans-Borders+ to building a more connected, sustainable, and inclusive Central Europe.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to advance cross-border mobility innovation.
