TRANS-BORDERS+

Project overview

Innovative mobility solutions to enhance the attractiveness of public transport in border regions

Cross-border connectivity is crucial for people in peripheral areas. But they often lack efficient service and information on public transport links to regions across borders. The TRANS-BORDERS+ project targets this issue by introducing new services and digital information systems that help with planning public transport journeys in border regions. Project partners from five countries develop solutions like open journey planners that link travel information from different providers across national borders. Moreover, the partners digitalise rural transport stops to turn them into modern mobility hubs and pilot new cross-border mobility services.

Roadmap

1

Enhancing Mobility Across Borders

TRANS-BORDERS+ brings together partners from border regions in Central Europe to improve cross-border public transport. The project focuses on digital traveller information, smart bus stops and mobility points, and better public transport connections in rural and peripheral border regions.

2

Building joint approaches for border regions

To respond to the challenges of cross-border mobility, the project partners are working together on joint approaches in the fields of digital traveller information, smart bus stops and mobility points, and innovative public transport services tailored to the needs of border regions.

3

Turning cooperation into practical solutions

Building on their joint work, the project partners are developing practical solutions for better cross-border public transport. The focus lies on digital traveller information, smart bus stops and mobility points, and innovative public transport services tailored to the needs of border regions.

4

Bringing joint concepts into practice

TRANS-BORDERS+ is putting its joint concepts into practice in the project areas. Through pilot-oriented activities, the partners are working on digital traveller information, smart bus stops and mobility points, and improved cross-border public transport services tailored to local and regional conditions.

5

Putting joint solutions into practice

TRANS-BORDERS+ is putting its joint solutions into practice in the pilot regions. The partners are working on cross-border digital traveller information, applying the toolbox for smart bus stops and mobility points, and testing new approaches for public transport services adapted to regional needs.

6

Building on pilot results for the next phase

TRANS-BORDERS+ is building on the results of its pilot actions and joint activities in both project areas. The experience gained so far is helping the partners to identify practical follow-up steps for digital traveller information, smart bus stops and mobility points, and future cross-border public transport services.

7

Preparing uptake and transfer beyond the project

TRANS-BORDERS+ is preparing the next steps for uptake and transfer in both project areas. Based on the results of the pilot actions and joint activities, the partners are working on Regional Action Plans and follow-up pathways that can support the continued development of cross-border public transport beyond the project duration.

8

Staying connected and shaping the next steps

TRANS-BORDERS+ is continuing its exchange with stakeholders and interested actors as the project enters the next phase. Through project communication, events and dialogue on the Regional Action Plans, the partnership is helping to shape practical follow-up steps for cross-border public transport in the participating regions.

Transnational strategy on improvement of public transport in border regions

The transnational strategy for improving public transport in border regions is a key output of the TRANS-BORDERS+ project. Developed jointly by ten partners from five countries, it aims to strengthen cross-border mobility in the two pilot areas: Saxony–Liberec Region and Carinthia–Slovenia–Friuli Venezia Giulia. These regions face typical borderland challenges such as fragmented services, limited digital passenger information, and weak coordination between transport actors across national boundaries. Based on in-depth analyses, the strategy defines four strategic priorities: modernising public transport infrastructure, integrating digital passenger information systems, coordinating cross-border services, and enhancing accessibility and inclusion. For each priority, targeted measures were identified to address concrete regional needs. These measures form the basis for pilot actions and regional action plans. As such, the strategy not only guides the implementation of TRANS-BORDERS+, but also offers transferable solutions for other border regions across Central Europe.

Cross-Border Transport Enhancement Initiative

The Cross-Border Transport Enhancement Initiative translates the project’s transnational strategy into practical regional action plans for the two TRANS-BORDERS+ pilot areas: AT/SI/IT and DE/CZ. The action plans define tailored measures for improving cross-border public transport, digital traveller information and the transformation of selected stops into smart mobility points. They take into account the specific needs, challenges and opportunities of each border region and support cooperation between project partners, transport stakeholders and regional authorities. The plans are developed with stakeholder input and reviewed through a peer-review process. They provide a practical basis for follow-up activities, uptake and continued cooperation beyond the project lifetime.

Cross-border travel information service based on OJP in the cross-border region AT/SI/IT

TRANS-BORDERS+ works on improving digital traveller information in the Austria–Slovenia–Italy pilot area. The output builds on existing journey planning structures and focuses on better cross-border information for public transport users. The activities include the preparation and demonstration of OJP-based data exchange, improvements related to real-time data integration and the consideration of complementary mobility services such as on-demand transport. The aim is to make cross-border journeys easier to plan and to improve access to public transport information across national borders. The output provides a technical and organisational basis for more interoperable traveller information services in the three-border area.

Cross-border travel information service based on OJP in the cross-border region DE/CZ

TRANS-BORDERS+ works on improving digital traveller information in the German-Czech pilot area between Saxony and the Liberec Region. The output focuses on the technical and organisational preparation of cross-border data exchange for public transport information. The activities include the analysis of available data, the preparation of interfaces and the development of demonstration scenarios for improved cross-border journey planning. Due to the limited availability of real-time data on the Czech side, the project follows a pragmatic demonstration approach and prepares the technical basis for future integration as soon as the required data can be made available. The output supports better coordination between transport authorities, associations and technical systems and contributes to more user-friendly cross-border travel information in the DE/CZ border region.

Smart bus stop toolbox

TRANS-BORDERS+ develops a smart bus stop toolbox to support the upgrading of rural and cross-border public transport stops into modern mobility points. The toolbox helps partners and stakeholders identify suitable modules for better passenger information, accessibility, multimodal connections, digital services and user-friendly stop infrastructure. The output is based on the assessment of selected locations in the project regions and on practical planning needs identified during the pilot preparation. It provides guidance for choosing appropriate equipment and functions according to local conditions, passenger needs and available resources. The toolbox supports the preparation of pilot sites and provides a transferable basis for improving public transport stops in other rural and peripheral border regions.

Solution for improved cross-border public transport services

TRANS-BORDERS+ develops a transferable solution for improving cross-border public transport services in peripheral border regions. The output builds on the project’s WP3 pilot activities and focuses on practical requirements for planning, organising and operating cross-border public transport services. The work brings together experience from different pilot contexts, including the Gorizia/Nova Gorica cross-border bus service and the upgraded Štrekna Bus in the Koroška–Carinthia area. These pilots provide practical evidence on service planning, cross-border coordination, passenger needs, bicycle transport, tourism-related mobility, legal and operational requirements, and long-term service continuation. The solution will consolidate lessons learned and provide recommendations for public authorities, transport providers and regional stakeholders. It will support other Central European border regions that aim to strengthen sustainable, user-friendly and better coordinated public transport connections across national borders.
