Sensor installation took place from October 21 to 23. During this phase, CESTEL weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems were installed together with a leakage sensor developed by the University of Dresden as part of the BIM4CE project. The WIM systems enable continuous monitoring of vehicle loads crossing the viaduct, while the leakage sensor allows for the detection of water infiltration, which over time could negatively affect the durability and safety of the structure.
During the night between October 23 and 24, the installed systems were calibrated. This operation required the temporary nighttime closure of the carriageway and the controlled passage of fully loaded trucks, with weights ranging between 20 and 40 tonnes, to ensure measurement accuracy and data reliability.
The installation and commissioning of these advanced monitoring systems on the Sant’Ambrogio Viaduct represent an important step toward smarter and more effective structural monitoring. The collected data will support preventive maintenance strategies, enhance user safety, and contribute to extending the service life of the infrastructure.”
