Extreme Weather Catalogue Completed as Part of the LOCALIENCE Project

Date: 20.06.2025

One of the most significant outcomes of the project is the completion of the Extreme Weather Catalogue (EWC). This flagship deliverable is a shared database for the project regions, highlighting typical local extreme weather events alongside applicable local measures, capacities, and resources.

The EWC was developed by the Vas County Directorate for Disaster Management in Hungary and is available via an interactive online platform. It combines expert data provided by partners in fields such as meteorology, hydrology, agriculture, disaster response, and civil protection, as well as previous project results. It also draws from a comparative survey of disaster management systems in the participating countries—Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Poland—and a compilation of best practices identified in each nation.

Designed with a user-friendly interface, the EWC is accessible to the general public while also providing in-depth, verified data for professionals. Local and regional decision-makers can benefit from its structured, easy-to-navigate information to make quicker and more effective disaster management decisions.

The catalogue allows users to explore geographical details and previously compiled national Disaster Management Surveys. For each country, users can then browse descriptions of best practices and view key historical extreme weather events—including floods, droughts, hailstorms, fires, storms, heatwaves, and extreme frost—listed chronologically. Detailed meteorological data and local professional response actions are also included.

The EWC will play a crucial role in testing and establishing a Preliminary Performance Evaluation Methodology and will be incorporated into the project’s Online Knowledge Base. Once fully populated with data from participating countries and upon project completion, it is expected to serve as a long-term reference not only for project partners and stakeholders but also for other interested entities across Central Europe.
