During our recent partner meeting, we had the opportunity to visit the students and teachers of Cavedoni di Levizzano School in Castelvetro di Modena, recipients of the first Young Food Waste Fighters Award. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to see first-hand how their innovative approach to food waste prevention is engaging not only the school community, but also local stakeholders and citizens.
Our project leader, Gudrun Obersteiner, presented the objectives of the initiative and highlighted the importance of empowering young people to play an active role in addressing food waste. Representatives of the local administration and community shared insights into the school’s activities, their achievements, and the broader impact of the project within the municipality of Castelvetro di Modena.
A particularly meaningful part of the visit was hearing directly from the students involved in the โZero Waste Canteen โ Competing for Food Sustainabilityโ project. Their commitment, enthusiasm and active participation demonstrate the important role that young people can play in promoting more sustainable food practices and inspiring change within their communities.
The experience in Castelvetro di Modena highlighted the value of collaboration between schools, local authorities, families and the wider community. By bringing different stakeholders together around a common goal, initiatives such as this can contribute to lasting behavioural change and strengthen collective efforts to prevent food waste.
We look forward to seeing how the positive momentum generated by the initiative continues to develop and inspire further action towards a more sustainable and food-waste-conscious future.
