Activities from ReCo Pilot Actions: Reviving alpine meadows in the Karavanke – sustaining vibrant blooms and safeguarding endangered species, Slovenia

The alpine meadows of the Western Karavanke Mountains in Slovenia are rich in biodiversity but face growing threats from climate change, forestry, modern agriculture, and tourism. These landscapes, including the iconic daffodil meadows of Golica and nearby villages, are now being restored through the ReCo project.

Our work in ReCo focused on sustainable land management—such as later mowing, organic fertilization, and preserving steep meadows—to protect native species and support traditional ecosystems. A key achievement is our reseeding program, developed with the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation, which helps restore daffodil populations using seeds from local meadows.

We have also piloting remote mowing methods to care for hard-to-reach areas with minimal ecological impact. The project also raises awareness through educational events, such as hiking tours for visitors, workshops for landowners, and virtual experiences about daffodils and their habitats.

With more landowners joining the effort in 2025, the ReCo project is creating lasting impact — ensuring these alpine meadows remain vibrant and resilient for the future.
