The CENTRAL MOUNTAINS International Summer Camp brought together young participants from mountain regions across Central Europe to explore how they can actively contribute to the sustainable development of their communities.
The event translated the project’s research and governance concepts into practical learning experiences. Building on previous activities, including the Joint Strategy for community-led sustainable mountain development and the project’s work on youth participation, the Summer Camp provided an opportunity to test participatory approaches in an international environment.
Throughout the programme, participants took part in interactive workshops, field activities and group discussions addressing key challenges facing mountain regions, including sustainable tourism, environmental protection, local entrepreneurship, community engagement and cross-border cooperation. They worked together to identify practical solutions and develop ideas that could strengthen the resilience and attractiveness of mountain areas.
A particular focus was placed on participatory governance and the role of young people in decision-making processes. Through simulations, collaborative exercises and dialogue with experts and project partners, participants explored how citizens can become active partners in shaping regional development policies.
The Summer Camp also created an international network of young people interested in mountain development, encouraging cooperation beyond national borders and strengthening links between Alpine and Carpathian regions.
Main outcomes

- promoted dialogue between youth, public authorities, researchers and regional stakeholders;

The experience confirmed one of the CENTRAL MOUNTAINS project’s key conclusions: sustainable mountain development requires governance models that actively involve local communities and empower younger generations to participate in shaping the future of mountain regions.
The methods tested during the Summer Camp remain relevant beyond the lifetime of the project and can inspire future youth engagement initiatives across Central Europe’s mountain regions.
