On 17–18 September 2024, a two-day seminar was organised in Betliar and at local farms within the Slovak Karst Biosphere Reserve, one of Slovakia’s most valuable natural areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The event focused on the relationship between traditional shepherding practices and the conservation of large carnivores, including bears, wolves and lynx.
The seminar brought together farmers, conservation experts and other stakeholders to discuss practical approaches for reducing human–wildlife conflicts and supporting coexistence in areas where livestock farming and large carnivore habitats overlap. Participants exchanged experiences and explored strategies for protecting livestock while maintaining healthy wildlife populations and preserving traditional farming practices.
Key takeaways: The seminar highlighted the importance of cooperation between farmers, conservationists and local stakeholders in developing effective coexistence solutions. Sharing practical experiences and knowledge on preventive measures, livestock protection and wildlife management can help create conditions where both rural livelihoods and large carnivore conservation can thrive. The event strengthened dialogue between key actors and contributed to building more sustainable approaches to living alongside large carnivores in the Carpathian region.
