As part of the ZEB4ZEN project, a Digital Twin of the UNESCO city of Quedlinburg was presented at the IEEE IHTC Conference in Bari, demonstrating how digital solutions can support the development of Energy Action Plans for historic urban areas.

The Digital Twin, developed with the support of Dronodat GmbH, creates a digital representation of Quedlinburg that can support city planners in exploring energy-related interventions within a historically and culturally sensitive urban environment.

Integrating renewable energy technologies and new energy infrastructure into historic city centres presents a particular planning challenge. Energy transition measures need to respond to decarbonisation objectives while respecting the architectural and cultural characteristics that make these areas unique.

Digital tools such as the Quedlinburg Digital Twin can help bridge this gap by providing a visual and spatial basis for analysing and communicating potential energy solutions. In this way, complex energy-planning information can be connected with the actual urban environment, supporting a better understanding of proposed interventions among planners, decision-makers and other stakeholders.

The presentation in Bari demonstrated how digitalisation can support both informed energy planning and the communication of Energy Action Plans, helping historic cities explore pathways towards a low-carbon future while preserving their cultural heritage.
