From local innovation to lasting impact: GreenPATH concludes its journey in Brussels

On 21 October 2026, the GreenPATH partnership gathered at the Emilia-Romagna Region Delegation to the European Union in Brussels for the project’s Final Conference, bringing together European policymakers, mobility experts, regional authorities and project partners to reflect on the achievements of GreenPATH and explore the future of sustainable commuting across Central Europe.

After months of transnational cooperation, the conference provided an opportunity to showcase the solutions developed and tested within the project, exchange lessons learned and discuss how local experiences can contribute to broader European mobility policies.

Eight pilot actions, seven Functional Urban Areas, one shared ambition

At the heart of GreenPATH were eight pilot actions implemented across seven Functional Urban Areas: Berlin, Vienna, Maribor, Monza, Ravenna, Kecskemét and Osijek.

These actions explored different approaches to encouraging more sustainable commuting among students and workers, combining behavioural change initiatives, stakeholder engagement, digital innovation and mobility management measures adapted to local needs.

The conference highlighted two complementary solutions developed through GreenPATH:

  • Mobility Management Coordination Dashboard: a data-driven tool designed to support mobility managers in integrating commuting information, coordinating initiatives across territories and monitoring their impact.
  • Mobility Management Packages for Commuting Students and Employees: tailored approaches combining digital tools, micro-incentives, gamification and stakeholder engagement to encourage sustainable commuting choices.

Together, these solutions demonstrate how data-driven coordination and individual behavioural change can contribute to more sustainable mobility systems.

Connecting project results with European mobility priorities

The conference opened with reflections on the importance of European territorial cooperation in accelerating the green transition.

Elodie Villeneuve, Programme Officer at Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE, highlighted how the results of GreenPATH and other cooperation projects contribute to a greener Central Europe and can generate further impact through capitalisation initiatives.

Anna Giarandoni, representing GreenPATH Lead Partner ITL, presented the project’s achievements and stressed the importance of embedding lessons learned into mobility policies to ensure that successful solutions can be replicated beyond the project’s lifetime.

The European policy perspective was provided by Giacomo Lozzi, Policy Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE), who discussed the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), including its 431 urban nodes, and European frameworks supporting sustainable urban mobility.

Looking towards the future, Professor Giovanni Circella from Ghent University explored emerging mobility trends, the importance of behavioural change and opportunities to better integrate passenger mobility and urban logistics.

Making sustainable mobility possible: governance, cooperation and transferability

A central message emerging from the conference was that innovative solutions alone are not enough: lasting change requires effective governance, institutional commitment and cooperation among stakeholders.

During the session on integrated governance, Gabriele Grea (Redmint) emphasised how governance arrangements can create the conditions needed to implement sustainable mobility measures and ensure their continuity over time.

The session on Replication & Policy Transfer, presented by Anna Marconato and Riccardo Maratini from the Central European Initiative – Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES), focused on translating locally tested solutions into recommendations that can be adapted and replicated in other territories.

Their presentation highlighted several essential conditions for successful transferability:

  • Understanding local mobility needs and commuting patterns.
  • Combining behavioural change initiatives with practical mobility alternatives, services and infrastructure.
  • Engaging stakeholders and using data to adapt solutions to different contexts.
  • Ensuring institutional ownership and adequate resources to sustain results over time.

These lessons underline one of GreenPATH’s key achievements: providing not only practical tools but also knowledge and recommendations that can support future sustainable commuting strategies across Central Europe.

The journey continues: from GreenPATH to CROSS-MOVE@CE

Although the Final Conference marked the conclusion of GreenPATH’s activities, its results will continue to contribute to new European cooperation initiatives.

As highlighted by Valentina Cafforio (ITL) during the closing session, GreenPATH’s achievements will be further capitalised through CROSS-MOVE@CE, a new Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE project led by the Central European Initiative – Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES).

Building on GreenPATH and other European cooperation projects, CROSS-MOVE@CE will further develop and adapt sustainable mobility approaches, strengthening data-driven coordination and sustainable commuting solutions across Central Europe.

This continuation reflects the ambition shared by the GreenPATH partnership: ensuring that the project’s results remain useful, transferable and capable of generating long-term impact beyond its implementation period.
