Four Regions, Four Challenges: Hydrogen Planning in Practice

Hydrogen development does not stop at national borders – but planning often does. How can neighbouring regions coordinate infrastructure, connect businesses and prepare for a growing hydrogen economy? HyAdvanCE will explore these questions through four pilot actions across Central Europe.

Each pilot addresses a different challenge, from infrastructure planning and clean mobility to business readiness and regional cooperation. Together, they will test practical approaches that other European regions can learn from.

🇩🇪 🇵🇱 Germany–Poland: Planning hydrogen across borders

How can neighbouring regions plan a shared hydrogen future?

East Brandenburg and Western Pomerania have opportunities to connect hydrogen production, infrastructure and future demand. Yet these developments need coordination across the German-Polish border.

The pilot will bring together regional stakeholders and test spatial planning tools, mapping approaches and hydrogen ecosystem models to support better-informed planning decisions.

The goal: Help neighbouring regions identify opportunities and coordinate hydrogen development across borders.

🇸🇮 🇦🇹 Slovenia–Austria: Connecting hydrogen mobility

What does it take to develop a hydrogen corridor across two countries?

Hydrogen-powered transport depends on more than vehicles. It also requires suitable refuelling infrastructure, reliable supply and coordination between regions.

The Slovenian-Austrian pilot will explore possible hydrogen mobility scenarios, assess infrastructure needs and test planning and governance approaches for a cross-border corridor.

The goal: Support more coordinated development of hydrogen mobility infrastructure.

🇨🇿 🇩🇪 Czechia–Germany: Preparing businesses for hydrogen opportunities

Are local businesses ready to become part of the hydrogen economy?

Hydrogen creates potential opportunities for companies, but many SMEs still face gaps in knowledge, skills and access to relevant networks.

In the Ústí Region and neighbouring German regions, the Cross-H2-Competences pilot will work with SMEs and other stakeholders to assess hydrogen readiness, identify barriers and explore future opportunities. Interviews, assessments and cross-border workshops will help test practical approaches to business engagement.

The goal: Strengthen hydrogen competences and connect businesses with emerging cross-border opportunities.

🇵🇱 Poland: Building stronger hydrogen ecosystems

How can regional organisations work together to develop hydrogen opportunities?

A successful hydrogen economy requires cooperation between businesses, public authorities, researchers and energy stakeholders. But who brings these actors together, and which skills are missing?

The Polish pilot will examine regional cooperation networks, identify competence gaps and test models for hydrogen competence centres and training environments.

The goal: Strengthen regional hydrogen cooperation and develop practical approaches to competence building.

Four pilots, shared solutions

Although the challenges differ, the four pilots share one ambition: turn existing hydrogen knowledge into approaches that work in practice.

The experience gained will help validate the project’s Hydrogen Planning Guidance and contribute to new strategic approaches, practical handbooks and an Integrated Hydrogen Knowledge Hub.

By testing solutions in different territorial settings, HyAdvanCE aims to make hydrogen planning more coordinated, accessible and transferable across Central Europe.
