The X-Fire Workshop, held in Prague and organised within the framework of the COST Action NERO, brought together leading researchers, operational experts, and policymakers to advance scientific understanding of extreme wildfire events and strengthen international cooperation in wildfire risk management.
The workshop served as a dedicated platform for interdisciplinary exchange, integrating the latest knowledge from fire physics, meteorology, fire ecology, fuel dynamics, numerical modelling, machine learning, and remote sensing. Participants also discussed key research gaps in the observation, modelling, prediction, and management of extreme wildfire events.
Among the contributors were Lucie Kudláčková from CzechGlobe and Jaša Saražin from the Slovenian Forestry Institute, who presented their ongoing fire-related research focused on mitigating wildfire risk in Central Europe. Their work highlights the growing importance of scientific collaboration across borders in developing innovative approaches to wildfire prevention, preparedness, and response.
By fostering dialogue between researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers, the X-Fire Workshop continues to play a vital role in enhancing predictive capabilities, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and promoting the exchange of lessons learned from past wildfire events. Such sustained interdisciplinary cooperation is essential for improving resilience to increasingly frequent and severe wildfire events across Europe.
