Advancing Geothermal Energy Through the Reuse of Abandoned Wells

Date: 11.05.2026
By: TRANSGEO

The final conference, two technical excursions, and the project meeting marked an important milestone in the successful implementation of the TRANSGEO initiative. These events brought together project partners, experts, and stakeholders to review achievements, exchange knowledge, and discuss future opportunities for sustainable geothermal energy development.

Throughout the project, the consortium achieved significant progress in the field of transforming abandoned wells into viable sources of geothermal energy production. By addressing technical, regulatory, and economic challenges, the partners demonstrated that existing well infrastructure can be effectively repurposed to support renewable energy generation while reducing environmental impacts and investment costs.

The final conference highlighted key project outcomes, including feasibility studies, lessons learned from pilot implementations, and strategic recommendations for wider market uptake. In addition, the two technical excursions provided participants with valuable on-site insights into practical applications and the operational potential of geothermal systems based on abandoned wells.

At a time when societies are facing increasing pressure due to dependence on conventional energy resources and volatile energy markets, the reuse of abandoned wells for geothermal purposes represents a highly relevant and forward-looking solution. It contributes to energy security, supports the transition to low-carbon systems, and promotes the efficient use of existing assets.

The project meeting further strengthened cooperation among consortium members and laid the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at accelerating geothermal deployment across Europe and beyond.
