Milestone M2 Achieved: Key Progress in WP2 – Cross-Border Travel Information

Date: 15.12.2025
The TRANS-BORDERS+ project has reached an important implementation checkpoint with the successful completion of Milestone M2, as defined in the project Monitoring Plan. This milestone confirms the planned progress of Work Package 2 (WP2 – Cross-border Travel Information / Open Journey Planner) and represents a decisive step towards seamless digital passenger information across borders.

WP2 in focus: Open, cross-border travel information

WP2 is dedicated to the development of an open and interoperable cross-border travel information service based on the Open Journey Planner (OJP). The main objective is to improve the availability, quality and usability of public transport information across national borders by connecting existing systems, harmonising data interfaces and addressing technical and organisational barriers.

Activities in WP2 focus in particular on the two interconnected project border areas:

  • Saxony – Liberec Region
  • Carinthia – Slovenia – Friuli Venezia Giulia

Key achievements under Milestone M2

During the M2 reporting period, significant progress was achieved within WP2:

  • Completion and consolidation of the technical analysis of existing digital travel information systems, data availability and interoperability in the partner regions.
  • Intensified cooperation with key stakeholders, including transport authorities, transport associations and IT providers, to jointly define requirements, interfaces and responsibilities for OJP-based solutions.
  • Further development of the OJP system architecture for the cross-border pilot regions, including data flows, governance models and technical roles.
  • Validation of core technical recommendations derived from the analysis of innovative mobility services, with a strong focus on data interoperability, real-time information and system scalability.

These results form a solid foundation for the upcoming implementation and testing phases of the cross-border OJP services.

Importance of M2 for the project’s next steps

Reaching Milestone M2 confirms that WP2 is progressing according to plan. The work carried out demonstrates that cross-border digital travel information is technically feasible, while also highlighting the importance of close coordination between institutions, data owners and IT systems.

The outcomes of WP2 are a key building block for:

  • the implementation of OJP pilot services,
  • the integration of digital travel information with physical mobility points,
  • and the long-term transferability of project results to other border regions in Central Europe.

Outlook

In the next project phase, WP2 will focus on the practical implementation and pilot testing of OJP-based cross-border travel information services. The successful completion of Milestone M2 ensures that these activities will build on a robust technical and organisational framework.

With Milestone M2 achieved, TRANS-BORDERS+ continues to move closer to its goal of making public transport in border regions more attractive, accessible and seamlessly connected
