The DRKERSKY4CE project Repository has been online for some time now. It is a useful tool for collecting and finding data on light pollution.
So far, there is no standardized data collection practice. For this reason, we developed a digital repository to collect and harmonise night-sky brightness and light pollution measurements and data. It provides an easy and intuitive access to the data of existing instruments, networks and satellites that operates in Central Europe and beyond, providing all the information needed to interpret the data both to a general and specific public.
- A Measurement and Data section that allow to discover different stations of ground-based instruments located on the Earth’s surface and employed to collect data about various environmental or atmospheric conditions.
- The Photometer Network is dedicated to improving the density and quality of sky brightness measurements and to quantifying light pollution in non-urban areas, with particular attention to the areas of the project Pilot Demo Sites. As DARKERSKY4CE project we use the SQM (Sky Quality Meters), an affordable instrument, widely used among researchers and astronomers, to measure night sky brightness in units of magnitudes per square arcsecond.
- A Dynamic Monitoring Tool to support any organization that want to investigate perceptions and awareness of light pollution.
- A section dedicated to ecosystem services to highlight their importance and, thanks to a GIS map, identify key areas where preserving natural darkness can support wildlife, promote sustainable tourism, and guide environmental planning.
The repository is not only a tool for gathering information and data, but also for allowing anyone to contribute useful data for reducing light pollution in Europe.
