Description:
In the TRANSGEO project, we have carried out an assessment of the geothermal development potential of abandoned wells in the hydrocarbon basins of Central Europe (North German, Molasse, Vienna, and Pannonian Basins). Using a new database of over 10,000 deep hydrocarbon and other wells, we identify and present boreholes that are suitable for geothermal development and provide opportunities for engagement with the TRANSGEO experts, knowledge, and tools. Interested individuals and organisations from business, community, and policy sectors are invited to engage to (a) increase awareness of well reuse and TRANSGEO’s products (such as the web-based well selection tool for identifying appropriate wells), (b) inform direct heat consumers and potential developers about wells in their area of interest with high repurpose potential, and (c) identify policy improvements that can facilitate well reuse. During the discussion, we encourage questions about your interest in specific well reuse projects.

This engagement workshop supports TRANSGEO’s overall goal of achieving a structural change to geothermal energy production across Central Europe, by providing new tools and knowledge to support communities and industries in the energy transition and breaking down economic and technical barriers to well reuse. TRANSGEO (https://www.interreg-central.eu/projects/transgeo/) is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg Central Europe program.
