Maribor Launches Life-Saving Heat Warning System – Free Alerts Now Available!

Date: 17.07.2025
This simple but powerful system sends free SMS alerts to residents two days before a heatwave hits. The goal? To give you time to prepare, protect your health, and avoid heat stress.

Heatwaves are not just uncomfortable—they’re dangerous. More and more people are suffering from heat-related illnesses, especially those who are most at risk:

👵 Elderly people

🧑‍🦽 People with disabilities

🤰 Pregnant women

👶 Infants and small children

👨‍🔧 Outdoor workers

🏠 People living alone

💓 People with chronic conditions

Older adults, in particular, may not feel thirst or regulate body temperature as well, making them more vulnerable to dehydration and heatstroke.

How the Warning System Works

If a heatwave is forecasted, the City of Maribor sends a free SMS alert two days in advance. This gives you time to:

Shop for groceries or medicine

Adjust your daily routine

Check in with vulnerable friends or family

Take preventive steps to stay cool

💬 To subscribe, residents should send an SMS with the word Vrocina to 051 228 777. ✅ To confirm, reply with Vrocina da to the same number. Subscribers then receive early warnings directly on their phone.

New Leaflet: Heat Protection Tips for Vulnerable Groups

To support the warning system, the City has published an informative leaflet with practical tips on how to stay safe during hot days. It’s available both online and in printed form, and it focuses on easy-to-follow advice like:

Stay indoors between 10:00 and 17:00

Drink plenty of water and unsweetened drinks

Eat light meals like fruits, soups, and vegetables

Wear light, breathable clothing and a hat

Keep your home cool—ventilate only in the early morning or evening

Rest in the shade or green spaces like parks or forests

Even though the media regularly shares this kind of advice, local emergency departments continue to see an increase in heat-related cases during summer. That’s why this system and leaflet are essential tools for prevention.

This initiative is part of Maribor’s wider Heat Action Plan, which includes:

  • Short-term protection for residents
  • Medium-term awareness campaigns
  • Long-term strategies for a more climate-resilient city.
