UrbanBlueHealth: Modern Technologies for the Health of Łódź Residents

Date: 02.06.2025
The swimming season has begun in Łódź, and with it, initiatives aimed at improving water quality and health safety at city swimming areas. As part of the Interreg Central Europe Programme, UrbanBlueHealth project, whose Polish partners are the Municipal Sports and Recreation Center (MOSiR Łódź) and the Institute of Occupational Medicine named after Prof. Dr. Jerzy Nofer, innovative technological solutions are being implemented to support the cleanliness and ecology of urban water bodies.

A modern aeration system is in operation at Stefański Ponds, which increases oxygen levels in the deeper layers of the water, reducing algae growth and preventing suffocation – a common problem affecting water quality during the summer. Additionally, the effectiveness of the aeration will be regularly assessed through water quality monitoring, taking into account a wide range of physicochemical and biological parameters. This makes the swimming area safer and more user-friendly for Łódź residents.

The season launch was accompanied by a press conference (May 30th) attended by Adam Wieczorek, Vice Mayor of Łódź; Iwona Safjanowska, Director of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Center; and Dr. Anna Kozajda, Head of the Biological Safety Laboratory (Chemical Safety Department). During the conversation, Dr. Kozajda emphasized the importance of a scientific approach, based on reliable research, for environmental and health protection in urban recreational spaces, as well as the role of modern technologies in ensuring the safety of bathing area users.

The UrbanBlueHealth project is an excellent example of collaboration between science and local government, bringing real health and ecological benefits to the residents of Łódź. As the Institute of Occupational Medicine, we are pleased to be actively participating in this project and supporting the implementation of modern management systems for natural urban bathing areas in Łódź.

We invite you to use the bathing area and follow our activities!
