The online seminar “Sustainable Paper Procurement in Practice” was organised by the KNB – Competence Centre for Sustainable Procurement Saxony as a capacity building activity for public authorities and organisations. The webinar took place on 10 June 2026 from 09:00 to 11:00 and brought together 24 participants from public sector organisations and other regional stakeholders.
The seminar highlighted the important role of sustainable paper procurement in reducing environmental impacts and supporting climate and resource protection. Public authorities and organisations have significant purchasing power and can contribute to sustainability goals by making informed choices regarding paper products. The session explored how recycled paper can become a standard solution in procurement processes and what benefits this approach offers.
Participants gained insights into current developments and practical aspects of sustainable paper procurement. The webinar addressed the role of paper in an increasingly digital working environment and discussed when paper-based and digital solutions are appropriate. Data and facts on paper consumption in Germany and worldwide provided a broader context for understanding environmental impacts.
A key focus was placed on environmental labels and certification schemes, particularly the Blue Angel label, and how they can support the selection of environmentally preferable products. The seminar also covered the benefits of recycled paper regarding climate protection, resource conservation, forest and biodiversity protection, environmental performance and circular economy principles.
In addition, practical aspects of implementation were discussed, including the quality, costs and availability of recycled paper products. Best practice examples from businesses and public administrations demonstrated how sustainable paper procurement can be successfully implemented in practice.
The session was led by Lea Eggers, Head of the Office of the Initiative Pro Recyclingpapier (IPR). With more than ten years of experience in sustainability consulting, she advises companies and public administrations on the transition to recycled paper products carrying the Blue Angel label. Through projects, publications and presentations, she promotes awareness of the benefits of recycled paper and responsible paper consumption.
The webinar concluded with an interactive discussion session, allowing participants to address individual questions and exchange experiences related to sustainable paper procurement.
