The online seminar “Successfully Combining Public Procurement Law and Climate Protection” was organised by the KNB – Competence Centre for Sustainable Procurement Saxony as a capacity-building activity for public authorities. The webinar took place on 27 April 2026 from 13:30 to 16:00 and brought together 33 participants from public sector organisations across the region.
Against the backdrop of evolving legislation, ambitious climate targets and increasing policy support for sustainable procurement, the seminar explored how climate protection objectives can be strategically and legally integrated into public procurement processes. Participants gained practical insights into how procurement can contribute to environmental goals while maintaining economic efficiency and legal compliance.
The seminar covered the legal and economic foundations of sustainable public procurement and examined key stages of procurement procedures where climate-related requirements can be incorporated. Particular attention was given to the transformation of procurement strategies at the municipal level and to practical approaches for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through purchasing decisions.
Participants were introduced to best practice examples from public procurement and to publicly available tools for calculating life-cycle costs (LCC) and CO₂-related costs. The session highlighted how these instruments can support evidence-based decision-making and promote more sustainable procurement outcomes.
The seminar was led by Dr Jan Peter Müller, attorney-at-law, specialist lawyer for public procurement law and partner at GÖRG Partnerschaft von Rechtsanwälten mbB in Frankfurt. He advises public authorities as well as national and international companies on all areas of public commercial law. A particular focus of his work is sustainable procurement, supporting clients in implementing sustainable investments and procurement processes in a legally compliant, economically viable and organisationally effective manner.
The event concluded with an interactive discussion session, providing participants with the opportunity to raise individual questions and exchange experiences related to climate-friendly public procurement and the practical implementation of sustainability requirements.
