The ReBioClim session (session M3) focused on the restoration of streams in urban and suburban areas as the backbone for the expansion of green infrastructure. In addition to the ecological enhancement of watercourses as corridors and habitats, a particular focus was placed on designing their riparian areas as green and recreational spaces that contribute to improving ecosystem services and quality of life. Such measures to strengthen biodiversity and ecosystem services were discussed as nature-based solutions during the session.
The aim of the event was to present innovative approaches, discuss evaluation frameworks, and promote exchange with stakeholders in order to assess the value of these measures and support their sustainable implementation. Numerous examples from European cities were used to highlight both the need for renaturation measures and the challenges involved in their practical implementation. In addition, transdisciplinary methods were presented that can be used to develop and adapt nature-based solutions together with residents and interest groups.
