The Andrija Štampar Teaching Institute of Public Health recently published an insightful article highlighting the importance of green and blue infrastructure in urban areas for public health. Urban green spaces, such as parks, gardens, lakes, and rivers, play a crucial role in improving air quality, reducing stress, fostering social interactions, and promoting contact with nature, all of which contribute to healthier cities. However, certain urban plants, particularly those that produce allergenic pollen, can pose health risks, especially for people with respiratory conditions. The solution lies in thoughtful urban planning, by increasing biodiversity, selecting low-allergen species, and managing urban trees effectively, we can create greener, healthier environments. This article is part of the GreenScape CE project, which aims to integrate green infrastructure into urban landscapes, enhancing resilience to climate change while improving public health.
