As part of the SuPeRBE project, the City of Šibenik is exploring ways to make the Meterize neighbourhood more resilient to climate change. By assessing local climate risks and identifying possible improvements, the project is helping the city plan measures to protect residents, buildings and public spaces from extreme heat and drought.

Meterize Neighbourhood Today

Meterize is a mainly residential neighbourhood in the north-eastern part of Šibenik, covering approximately 37 hectares and home to around 7,000 residents.

Like many urban areas, Meterize is increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change, particularly high summer temperatures and periods of drought.

Through the SuPeRBE project, the neighbourhood was assessed using the RBE-CE assessment system, which helps cities understand how climate-related risks affect buildings and neighbourhoods and identify areas where improvements are most needed.

The results showed that extreme heat is the main climate risk in Meterize, with an overall risk score of 0.69, classified as rather negative. This is mainly due to the limited number of green spaces, a lack of natural shade and cooling areas, and the relatively high population density.

Buildings were identified as particularly vulnerable to extreme heat, highlighting the importance of improving their ability to remain comfortable during hot weather.

The assessment also examined drought, which received a risk score of 0.55, classified as neutral. However, the results highlighted challenges related to dry soil and insufficient irrigation of urban green spaces.

A separate assessment of Meterize Primary School (OŠ Meterize) also identified a rather negative risk from extreme heat, with a score of 0.64. This highlights the importance of improving conditions in public buildings, especially those used by children.

Making Meterize Greener and More Climate-Resilient

Based on the assessment results, the SuPeRBE project identified several measures that could help Meterize better adapt to rising temperatures and periods of drought.

One of the main recommendations is to increase the number of trees and green spaces, particularly in public areas, playgrounds and recreational spaces. More greenery and shaded areas could help reduce the effects of extreme heat and create more comfortable outdoor environments for residents.

Improving the management of existing green spaces is another priority. This includes using plants that can better withstand dry conditions, introducing more efficient watering systems and regularly monitoring the condition of trees and vegetation.

The assessment also highlighted opportunities to make buildings more resistant to high temperatures. Better insulation, external shading, reflective or green roofs and natural cooling solutions could help maintain more comfortable indoor temperatures while reducing energy demand.

Alongside physical improvements, the project recommends strengthening public awareness and preparedness for extreme weather. This could include heat warnings, information campaigns and additional support for residents who are particularly vulnerable during heatwaves.

Finally, climate adaptation measures should become an important part of future urban planning, building renovation and water management decisions in Šibenik.

Next Steps Towards a More Resilient Neighbourhood

The assessment provides a starting point for planning future climate adaptation activities in Meterize.

The next step is to identify which measures are most suitable and realistic for implementation, in cooperation with the City of Šibenik, local residents, public service providers and other relevant stakeholders.

Improving local data and mapping will also help the city better understand climate risks and make informed decisions about future investments.

Regular assessments will allow progress to be monitored over time and priorities to be adjusted as new information becomes available.

Through SuPeRBE, Šibenik is taking steps towards creating a greener, more comfortable and climate-resilient Meterize neighbourhood, demonstrating how local climate assessments can support practical improvements in urban areas and help communities prepare for the challenges of climate change.
