PopUpUrbanSpaces comes to an end – leaving a lasting legacy for greener, people-centred cities

Date: 25.06.2026

Together, partners from across Central Europe explored how tactical urbanism, tactical transit and digital campaigning can encourage more sustainable mobility choices and help create greener, more people-friendly public spaces.

Throughout the project, pilot cities successfully implemented demonstration actions that allowed citizens and decision-makers to experience alternative uses of streets and public spaces. These interventions were complemented by engaging digital communication campaigns, helping to raise awareness and encourage behavioural change towards walking, cycling and public transport.

Beyond the pilot actions, the project delivered a number of important long-term results, including the PopUpUrbanSpaces Toolkit for Tactical Urbanism, Tactical Transit and Digital Campaigning Interventions, providing practical guidance for municipalities and other stakeholders wishing to replicate the project’s approaches. The partnership also developed Territorial Action Plans and policy recommendations to support the wider uptake of these solutions.

One of the project’s greatest achievements has been the strong cooperation established between municipalities, experts, NGOs and citizens across Central Europe. Together, we demonstrated that even small-scale interventions can trigger meaningful conversations, inspire behavioural change and contribute to more liveable cities.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all project partners, stakeholders, experts, local communities and citizens who contributed to the success of PopUpUrbanSpaces.

Although the project has officially finished, its results, tools and lessons learned will continue to support cities across Europe in building healthier, greener and more sustainable urban environments.

Thank you for following our journey!
