The City of Pinerolo successfully completed the revitalisation of the Cortile Comunale, transforming the municipal courtyard into a greener, more comfortable and climate-resilient public space.
The implemented measures focused on reducing heat accumulation, increasing greenery and creating better conditions for people using the courtyard. New vegetation, planters and green areas were introduced, while mobile furniture provided flexible spaces for relaxation and social interaction.
A shaded pergola was installed in the area most exposed to sunlight, providing protection during hot days. Light, high-reflectance surface coatings were also applied to selected surfaces to limit heat absorption and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. At the same time, the number of parking spaces was reduced, allowing more of the courtyard to be dedicated to greenery and people-oriented uses.
The implementation also included the artistic intervention “Orizzonte Interno” by Oscar Cauda. The large-scale ground artwork, inspired by the agricultural landscape of Pinerolo, used light and reflective colors that complemented the climate-adaptation measures while giving the courtyard a new visual identity.
The landscaping was developed according to biophilic design principles. A diverse selection of plants was introduced to provide seasonal variation, from winter and spring flowering species to aromatic plants during the summer months, supporting both biodiversity and the quality of the space.
Municipal employees were actively involved in the implementation process and contributed to shaping the final character of the courtyard, including participation in the creation of the ground painting.
With all planned interventions completed, the Cortile Comunale became a practical demonstration of climate-responsive regeneration, combining nature-based solutions, shading, reflective materials, flexible furniture and art within a historic urban courtyard.
