In the Pomurje region, the MTAV pilot “Innovation System for Reduction of Food Loss and Waste” has shown that small actions can make a big difference. By combining digital innovation, community engagement, and collaboration across sectors, the pilot has transformed the way surplus food is managed—turning potential waste into valuable resources.
Bringing People and Technology Together
At the heart of the pilot is the relaunched FLW Marketplace, a digital platform where businesses, farmers, and organizations can share surplus food quickly and efficiently. Since its launch, the marketplace has helped reduce food waste in the regional supply chain by over 10%, ensuring that good food reaches those who need it instead of going to waste.
The pilot also produced a national FLW booklet, offering practical guidance, regulations, and success stories for broader adoption of food waste reduction practices across Slovenia.
Engaging the Community
Raising awareness was another key focus. Through workshops, promotional events, and a digital campaign, over 4,000 citizens learned about circular food systems and how they can contribute to reducing food waste in their daily lives. Over 30 organizations and 50 stakeholders actively participated, creating a ripple effect of knowledge, collaboration, and action.
A Network of Partners
The pilot brought together local authorities, research institutions, SMEs, media, and national authorities, proving that tackling food waste requires a multi-stakeholder effort. From farmers to tech innovators, everyone played a role in building a more sustainable food system.
Impact Beyond Numbers
This pilot is more than statistics—it’s about changing mindsets and behaviors, fostering a culture of resourcefulness, and inspiring communities to act. It demonstrates how combining innovation with collaboration can create tangible environmental and social benefits.
