Unioncamere del Veneto tested the H2CE GIS approach to support hydrogen planning in the Veneto Region.
The pilot assembled a database of more than 2,500 records, creating an evidence base for examining potential hydrogen production, demand, distribution and infrastructure.
How the data were processed
The pilot work included:
- assessing and cleaning the collected records;
- integrating regional statistical information;
- converting energy-consumption data into estimates of potential hydrogen demand;
- geolocating relevant facilities and data points; and
- producing maps for regional analysis.
The resulting GIS environment helped users examine spatial relationships between energy consumption, possible hydrogen demand, infrastructure and potential development locations.
Practical value
The pilot demonstrated how public authorities could use territorial data to:
- identify areas with potential hydrogen demand;
- understand links with existing energy infrastructure;
- compare possible development scenarios;
- detect missing or inconsistent data; and
- support more informed regional investment decisions.
Lessons learned
The Veneto experience showed that collecting data was only the first step. Records from different sources had to be standardised, checked and translated into planning assumptions before they could support meaningful analysis.
The pilot also underlined the importance of explaining how potential hydrogen demand was calculated. Transparent methods made the results easier for public authorities and external stakeholders to interpret.
The Veneto findings contributed to the final H2CE strategic decision-support approach and were integrated into the H2CE Collaboration Platform.
