On the 9th February 2026, Medjimurje Energy Agency Ltd. (MENEA) and University of Zagreb – Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering (UNIZG-RGNF) organised a regional stakeholder event titled “Geothermal energy as a driver of sustainable development and energy transition in Medjimurje”, with the aim of presenting the geothermal potential of the County and highlighting opportunities for future investments in geothermal infrastructure.

The central focus of the event was the presentation of several ongoing projects related to geothermal energy development in the region, with particular emphasis on the project TRANSGEO. The event was opened by UNIZG-RGNF with a presentation of the IT tool for well assessment, followed by the first presentation of the feasibility study for the pilot site Mihovljan, highlighting the current status of the field, its geothermal potential, and possible future investments. In the continuation of the event, MENEA presented the Transnational Action Plan, which is currently under development, with a focus on the Transnational Strategy as its basis, outlining the main identified strategic objectives, priorities, and corresponding measures for sustainable repurposing of abandoned hydrocarbon wells in Central Europe.

In addition to the project TRANSGEO, several complementary initiatives were presented. The project InnoGeoPot, with focus on assessing the medium and shallow geothermal potential of Medjimurje, as well as identifying possibilities for thermal energy storage using BTES and ATES technologies. The project Danube GeoHeCo by promoting the use of shallow geothermal systems for heating and cooling, including a pilot investment involving the installation of a geothermal heat pump at the Branch School Pušćine. Finally, the project GeoBuilding aimed to encourage the energy renovation of public buildings through shallow geothermal energy, with a pilot investment planned at the Primary School Donji Kraljevec.

Organised as an open conference, the event gathered representatives of regional and local authorities, educational institutions, development and energy agencies, and other stakeholders, providing an opportunity to discuss the role of geothermal energy in supporting the sustainable development and energy transition in Medjimurje County.
