The Heat Map of Maribor

Date: 04.12.2023

A heat and climate analysis of the city of Maribor was developed as a basis for municipal planning and potential replication in other cities. The map represented the general heat stress conditions across Maribor and illustrated the effects of urban heat build-up. Low heat stress levels were observed in the outer areas of the city, while the highest levels occurred in central zones and areas with a high degree of surface sealing.

Vulnerable infrastructure—including hospitals, kindergartens, nursing homes, and schools—was systematically identified and integrated into the map to support targeted adaptation planning. In addition, the “Heat Hot Spot Focus Map” was produced to highlight areas of concentrated heat stress and their spatial overlap with vulnerable infrastructure, providing a practical tool for prioritizing interventions.

This approach and mapping framework were designed to be transferable and applicable to other municipalities aiming to assess urban heat risks and identify priority action areas. © The underlying map was protected by copyright and was provided by the Slovenian Surveying and Mapping Authority.
