From Data to Decisions: How the Smart Data Hub Supports Smarter Building Renovations in Europe

Renovating buildings is one of the most effective ways to cut energy use, reduce emissions, and save costs โ€” but only if decisions are based on solid data. Thatโ€™s exactly where the Smart Data Hub (SDH) comes in. ๐Ÿ’ก

Developed within the MESTRI-CE project together with Scandens, the Smart Data Hub is a digital tool designed to collect, analyze, and structure building-related data, supporting building owners and public stakeholders in planning renovations more effectively.

๐Ÿ” What can the Smart Data Hub do?

The SDH brings all relevant information into one place and turns it into actionable insights: โœ” Thermal assessments of buildings
โœ” A central hub for building-related data
โœ” Automatic creation of renovation plans with ecological & economic comparisons
โœ” Portfolio analysis for multiple buildings at once

This makes it easier to prioritize measures, compare scenarios, and build long-term renovation strategies โ€” even for large building portfolios.

๐ŸŒ Tested across Europe

The Smart Data Hub has already been tested in real-life pilot regions across five European countries: Austria, Germany, Croatia, Italy, and Poland. Each pilot took into account regional specificities, regulatory frameworks, and practical requirements.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Austria:
In the city of Bruck an der Mur, seven public buildings โ€” nicknamed โ€œthe 7 sinsโ€ due to their poor thermal performance โ€” were analyzed to identify renovation priorities.

๐Ÿข Germany:
The municipal housing company WBG Nuremberg applied the SDH to a diverse residential building portfolio as part of its long-term renovation strategy.

๐Ÿซ Croatia:
Across four counties, 20 public buildings โ€” mainly schools, kindergartens, and healthcare facilities โ€” were assessed to identify renovation needs and investment opportunities.

๐Ÿฅ Poland:
In the regions of Mazovia and ลšwiฤ™tokrzyskie, 20 buildings including hospitals and schools were selected to tackle high energy demand and explore cost-effective retrofit options.

๐ŸŒฑ Italy:
The Autonomous Province of Bolzano, supported by the ClimateHouse Agency, is using the SDH to plan refurbishment measures for seven of its most energy-intensive public buildings.

๐Ÿš€ Whatโ€™s next?

With successful pilots completed, cities, municipalities, and other public stakeholders are now invited to adopt the Smart Data Hub and use data-driven insights to accelerate high-quality building renovations.

Smarter data means smarter decisions โ€” and better buildings for everyone. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธโœจ
