On 24 February 2026, during the fourth meeting of the Food Policy Academy series entitled ‘How cities reduce food waste: ecology, safety, relationships’, the experiences of the Municipality of Wrocław in implementing the foodCIRCUS project were presented.
During the meeting, Beata Flank, representing the Department of Strategy and Sustainable Development of the City of Wrocław, presented the city’s experiences from the implementation of the foodCIRCUS project.
It was emphasised that effectively combating food waste in schools requires an integrated systemic approach at every operational level, from optimising warehouse management through effective kitchen organisation to precise menu and portion planning.
It was also emphasised that the foundation for success rests on three pillars:
1. Communication and cooperation: building effective dialogue between management, administrators, cooks, parents and students.
2. Professionalisation of staff: Regularly improving the professional skills of administrators and cooks.
3. Environmental education: shaping proper eating habits and eco-friendly attitudes among the entire school community is the most effective tool for lasting change in attitudes towards respect for food.
We are sure, the more sustainable future is possible and we are glad to have so many amazing educators on our side!
