Food waste doesn’t have to end up in landfills, it can become a valuable resource. Thanks to the work of Emilia den Boer and her team at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, innovative processes are turning discarded food into useful products like lactic acid, biogas, and organic fertilizer.

By applying advanced waste-to-resource technologies, the team is helping transform organic waste into materials that can support renewable energy production, sustainable agriculture, and green industry. Lactic acid can be used in biodegradable plastics and food production, biogas provides a renewable energy source, and nutrient-rich fertilizer can return valuable elements back to the soil.

This kind of research shows how science and innovation can drive the circular economy – where waste is no longer a problem, but a resource waiting to be used.

From leftovers to renewable energy and sustainable materials – this is the future of waste management.
