First Bicycle Cinema in Würzburg

On 10 May 2025, Würzburg hosted its first bicycle cinema event! As part of the NiCE local pilot closing event in Würzburg, the theatre hall of the Erlöserschwestern was transformed into a truly unique cinema experience: no plug sockets, no conventional power – The electricity for the projector and sound system was generated entirely by muscle power.

Over 150 visitors filled the accessible venue on Bibrastraße, taking part in an eco-friendly movie night that showcased how much energy we all carry within us. On specially equipped bicycles, volunteers took turns generating the power needed to screen the Oscar-winning animated film “Flow” – a visually stunning, dialogue-free experience.

The evening’s atmosphere was further enriched by live music from the Mazltones and the Uvi Quintet, setting the perfect tone before the film began and after. Drinks and snacks were available by donation, and entry was free. The event was organized through a joint effort by the Zukunftshaus Würzburg, local bike courier service Radius, and the German Environment Agency.

But the Bicycle Cinema offered more than entertainment – it provided a powerful impulse for rethinking energy use, promoting sustainable mobility, and strengthening community spirit. All in line with the core mission of the NiCE project. Furthermore, all local project partners had the opportunity to present themselves in front of the big audience and show, what they have achieved during the last year.

The event received very positive feedback from attendees and was covered across various channels, including the local newspaper, television, and social media.
