Final stage of green revitalisation works in Staro Velenje within the RE-PUBLIC SPACES project

Date: 15.05.2026

The final stage of works is currently underway at the courtyard located in the historic centre of Velenje (Staro Velenje), as part of the Interreg Central Europe project RE-PUBLIC SPACES – Revitalisation of Public Spaces in Historic Cities.

The activities focus on improving user comfort, increasing greenery, and adapting the space to the challenges of climate change. The courtyard has already been equipped with urban furniture such as benches, tables, chairs, and waste bins, along with the first plantings in mobile containers.

The ongoing final phase includes additional mobile greenery in larger planters, container-grown trees, climbing plants, as well as the installation of shading elements and rainwater retention solutions.

The courtyard in Velenje is an important example of how formerly paved and greenery-free urban spaces can be revitalised through the introduction of vegetation and climate-sensitive solutions. The project demonstrates how the implementation of green infrastructure and mobile urban greenery can transform a previously concrete “urban desert” into a vibrant green heart of the city — improving environmental quality, user comfort, and the overall attractiveness of public space.

All interventions are being implemented with full respect for the historical character of the site — they are reversible and do not interfere with the existing surfaces or building façades.

The works are expected to be completed in May 2026, ensuring the space is fully ready for the upcoming season of use.
