Exploring Digital Fabrication: First Steps with Laser Cutting

As part of the DiSTT workshops at Happylab Vienna, apprentices were introduced to one of the key technologies in digital fabrication: laser cutting. The laser cutter was one of the first tools participants worked with and played an important role in the development of their projects. In particular, it was used to produce the housing of the robots that apprentices later assembled and programmed during the workshop.

Through guided tasks, participants learned how to prepare simple digital designs and translate them into physical objects using the laser cutter. This process helped them understand how digital files can directly control machines and result in precise, tangible outputs.

At the same time, the workshop left room for creative exploration. Apprentices were encouraged to develop their own small designs and experiment with different shapes and ideas. This playful approach allowed them to engage with the technology in an intuitive way and lowered initial barriers to working with digital fabrication tools.

By combining structured learning with open experimentation, the laser cutting activities supported both technical understanding and creativity. For many participants, it was their first experience turning a digital idea into a physical object – an important step in building confidence when working with modern production technologies.

These first hands-on experiences with laser cutting laid the foundation for the following workshop activities, where digital design, fabrication, and programming were increasingly combined.
