On Tuesday, 20 May 2025, the Ljubljana Fire Brigade hosted the unique event “Ognjeni zajtrk – varujemo skupaj” (“Fiery Breakfast – Protecting Together”), bringing together firefighters, representatives of the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO), and the media. A total of 15 journalists from all major Slovenian media outlets attended the event.
The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between forecasting, information, protection, and rescue services, as well as the media—who have an important role in information dissemination.
Why is media involvement essential?
“Effectively communicating key information before and during emergency events is the foundation of strong cooperation between responsible institutions. Improved performance by our services also leads to a faster response from those on the ground. During extreme weather events, the media play a crucial role, which is why exemplary cooperation between project partners and the media is a cornerstone of the communication strategy,” said Florjana Ulaga from ARSO.
The central part of the event was a presentation of the Slovenian pilot activities within the LOCALIENCE project, implemented by ARSO and the Gasilska brigada Ljubljana – Ljubljana Fire Brigade, in collaboration with 35 volunteer fire departments under the Ljubljana Firefighters Association, and the City of Ljubljana.
The project represents an important step forward in strengthening preparedness for extreme weather events through the use of advanced technology and rapid communication. Its goal is to develop early warning and rapid response solutions for extreme meteorological and hydrological conditions in local environments.
