An inspiring event in Austria on 26 June

Date: 08.07.2025

Inspiring event last 26 of June in Weissensee, Austria. Different stakeholders from all over Austria and from Germany gathered together to joint forces against light pollution in an event organised by our partner Carinthia University of Applied Sciences together with Paten der Nache Austria and Astronomische Vereinigung Kartern.

By officially signing the DarkerSky Sentinel Alliance Declaration, they stated their commitment to work together across Europe to tackle this underestimated problem.

Various and enriching presentations enlivened the day. We had inspiring and encouraging words by the Carinthian Provincial Councilor – Sara Schaar, the Major for the Municipality of Weissensee – Karoline Turnschek and the Nature Park Weissensee Chief of Boaord – Franz Schier. We had the chance to share the ongoing activities from our project and exchange with the associated partners and other organisation, that are carrying similar initiatives. We finished with a great talk from Christina Pichler-Koban (E.C.O. Institute of Ecology) and Clemens Schnaitl (Sternenpark Attersee-Traunsee).

Unfortunately, we were not able to see the stars due to the cloudy weather, but still we had an awesome guided tour with the park rangers, exploring the nocturnal wildlife living along the lake.

In conclusion, it was a day of great inspiration for the work ahead of us and the realisation that we are not alone in our efforts to reduce light pollution.
