Gastech 2025 took place at Fiera Milano from 9 to 12 September 2025.

The exhibition and conference covered natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, low-carbon technologies, shipping and the wider energy transition. More than 1,000 exhibitors presented technologies and services across the energy value chain.

Hydrogen programme

The dedicated hydrogen sessions examined:

  • different hydrogen-production pathways;
  • advanced materials for liquid hydrogen;
  • hydrogen storage and transport;
  • scaling ammonia production and use;
  • safety requirements;
  • integration with existing energy infrastructure;
  • industrial applications;
  • commercial viability; and
  • the role of investors, project developers and industrial users.

Main lesson

The event placed hydrogen within a broader debate about energy security, affordability, industrial competitiveness and emissions reduction.

It showed that hydrogen was one component of the future energy mix rather than a universal replacement for other energy sources. Practical deployment depended on selecting applications where hydrogen provided clear decarbonisation value.

Relevance for regional authorities

For regional planners, the hydrogen programme reinforced the need to consider:

  • the source and carbon intensity of hydrogen;
  • infrastructure and safety requirements;
  • connections with industrial demand;
  • compatibility with existing energy systems;
  • investment and operating costs; and
  • competition with alternative decarbonisation solutions.

These considerations aligned with H2CE’s evidence-based approach to regional hydrogen planning.
