The forum took place during the Clean Hydrogen Convention, held on 25–26 October 2023. Under the theme “Hydrogen – Energy Carrier of the Future,” it focused on the internationalisation of the hydrogen sector and cooperation between Saxony and Lower Silesia.
The programme covered:
- Poland’s Hydrogen Strategy until 2030;
- hydrogen plans and projects in Lower Silesia;
- good practices from Saxony and Lower Silesia;
- regional hydrogen valleys and value chains;
- opportunities for Polish-German business and research cooperation.
Main results and lessons
Nearly 180 representatives of companies, research institutions, public authorities and regional energy organisations participated, including almost 50 representatives from Poland.
The forum showed that Saxony and Lower Silesia had complementary industrial capabilities and a shared interest in renewable hydrogen. Both regions were developing hydrogen strategies, projects and value chains that could benefit from closer coordination.
Discussions highlighted the importance of:
- connecting hydrogen infrastructure across national borders;
- improving knowledge of regional capabilities and planned projects;
- involving industry in the development of hydrogen value chains;
- linking regional hydrogen valleys with wider European networks;
- strengthening cooperation among companies, researchers and public authorities.
Practical value
The forum demonstrated how neighbouring industrial regions could use cross-border cooperation to coordinate hydrogen infrastructure, connect technology providers with potential users and develop stronger regional value chains.
This experience remained relevant to other regions in central Europe working to align hydrogen strategies and infrastructure beyond administrative and national borders.
