As part of a series of events entitled “Creating a Modern Maribor,” Energetika Maribor organized an Open Day entitled “More Energy Sources. Reliable Heat.” on 1 October 2026, during which the European project Solar4CE-Cities was also presented. The project promotes the wider use of solar energy in cities, the development of energy communities, and the exploration of new opportunities to increase energy self-sufficiency.
Mr. Alen Kolman presented the project’s objectives and initial results, highlighting the importance of integrating solar energy into urban infrastructure. The project explores opportunities for the more efficient use of renewable energy sources, including the integration of electricity and heat systems by using surplus electricity from photovoltaic (PV) systems to generate heat, thereby supporting more sustainable urban development.
As part of the event, a Solar4CE-Cities stand was set up, where visitors were introduced to a GIS application developed by FERI – the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Maribor. The application provides an overview of rooftop solar exposure in Maribor and the potential of individual rooftops for harnessing solar energy. It offers insights into their potential for the installation of photovoltaic systems, helping to improve understanding of the opportunities for harnessing solar energy in urban areas.
The presentation attracted considerable interest from participants, who were keen to explore the solar exposure of individual rooftops and their potential for solar energy generation. Such tools play an important role in raising awareness of the potential of renewable energy sources and encouraging their more efficient use.
Through their participation in the Solar4CE-Cities project, Javni holding Maribor and Energetika Maribor contribute to exploring solutions that can support the city’s energy transition and create new opportunities for a sustainable energy future in Maribor.
