By: CICADA4CE

The Intergenerational Garden of Education and Biodiversity was officially opened on 26 October at Janusz Korczak Upper Secondary School No. 6, located at 15 Zamenhofa Street in Sosnowiec. The new green space is designed to serve both the school community and residents of the Pogoń district, providing a place for relaxation, learning, social interaction and environmental awareness.

The first phase of the investment has been completed, including the construction of pathways and relaxation areas, the planting of shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennial plants, and the installation of two weather stations. These stations will monitor air temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure, helping assess the effects of nature-based solutions (NbS) on the local microclimate and their contribution to climate resilience. Students and teachers will participate in collecting and analysing the data.

The garden’s development is also a significant example of intergenerational cooperation. Its greening concept was jointly developed by members of the Municipal Urban Living Lab, including students, senior residents and local experts, through a series of collaborative workshops.

The transformation will continue in the coming months with the second phase, which will include the creation of an educational area. Once completed, the garden will provide a space for environmental education, biodiversity discovery and community engagement, while demonstrating how green infrastructure can help cities adapt to climate change.

The initiative represents a tangible outcome of the CICADA4CE project, showing how local cooperation and nature-based solutions can contribute to more resilient and inclusive urban environments.
