CROSS-IN

Project overview

CROSS-border INnovation for Smart Automation in Automotive Production & Mobility

Many automotive and mobility SMEs in central Europe’s border regions are under pressure to modernise production, yet lack transformation strategies, skilled staff and access to testing and support. CROSS-IN adapts tools from five earlier Interreg projects to help them introduce automation that improves productivity while keeping people and skills at the centre. An upgraded readiness index will identify gaps and guide training, expert exchanges and cross-border tests in companies. The results will feed into a joint action plan and an open platform for continued industry, research and policy cooperation.

Roadmap

1

BUILDING THE CROSS-IN TRANSFORMATION PLATFORM

The main objective of Work Package 1 is to give regional ecosystems a shared, evidence-based picture of where they stand on smart automation – and a realistic pathway forward. The CROSS-IN Transformation Readiness Model, built on results from Drive2Transform, is updated for four thematic fields: automation, robotics, cybersecurity and circular economy. It is applied in every partner region through workshops with SMEs, business support organisations, clusters, research institutions and public authorities.

The regional findings are then merged into transnational transformation scenarios. The target groups are companies, above all SMEs in the automotive and mobility supply chain, and business support organisations acting as multipliers. The results also give policy makers and authorities at all levels a factual basis on the state of their innovation ecosystems.

2

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR SMART AUTOMATION IN REGIONAL ECOSYSTEMS

Work Package 2 turns the analysis into competence. It builds a cross-border capacity building package that combines technical training on automation, robotics and cybersecurity with creative transformation methods – design thinking, LEGO® Serious Play® and co-creation formats taken over from Capacity2Transform. Separate training tracks address companies on the one hand and business support organisations and policy makers on the other, because the two groups need different things. Peer learning sessions, study visits and twinning activities between the partner regions make the exchange practical rather than theoretical. All formats are piloted in the regions and validated before they are released for uptake.

3

BUILDING A DURABLE CROSS-BORDER COMMUNITY

Work Package 3 makes sure that what CROSS-IN develops keeps working after the project ends. Thematic expert groups are set up along the four fields and bring together the people who actually implement transformation in their organisations.

Within these groups, cross-border use cases are developed and piloted, demonstrating how shared methods improve automation and innovation readiness across regions.

An international CROSS-IN conference with matchmaking brings the results to a wider audience, and a transnational action plan, a policy paper and a memorandum of understanding secure the continuation of the platform and the cooperation beyond September 2028.

Pilot actions

Outputs

The Transformation Readiness Model and the scenario building methodology form a two-fold tool for regional automotive and mobility ecosystems

A methodology that can be applied in further regions, and a set of transformation scenarios of transnational relevance. Validation will draw on the experience from the partner regions and on the lessons learned from the source projects.
Type of output: Solutions
In development

Validated cross-border transformation capacity building package for businesses, business support organisations and policy makers

The capacity building packages piloted during the project will be reviewed, adjusted on the basis of participant feedback and finalised for uptake in the partner regions. The validated package will be documented so that it can be taken up by other business support organisations and clusters.
Type of output: Solutions
In development

Validated cross-border use cases and use case development methodology for smart automation in automotive and mobility

The jointly developed cross-border use cases will be validated and the applied development methodology will be documented, so that business support organisations and SMEs can replicate the approach and build on it in their own regions.
Type of output: Solutions
In development

Action plan for the uptake of the CROSS-IN transformation platform and CROSS-IN solutions

A transnational action plan will define how the CROSS-IN platform and its solutions are taken up and continued after the project. It will include a sustainability and transfer plan, an impulse paper with recommendations for the policy level, and an addendum to the memorandum of understanding on how the cooperation is continued after the project.
