The Municipality of Velenje is exploring the possibilities of using shallow geothermal energy as a renewable source of heat. Within the European project HEAT 35, the Municipality of Velenje is assessing the geothermal potential of the soil at several locations across the municipality, particularly in the Kozjak area and the wider areas of Škale, Škalske Cirkovce and Vinska Gora. The results of the research will provide an important professional basis for further planning of sustainable energy solutions in the municipality.

In cooperation with the Geological Survey of Slovenia, an expert assessment of the possibilities for using geothermal energy in the municipality is being prepared. The analysis addresses technical, administrative and economic aspects of implementing geothermal installations. It includes an overview of planning and implementation procedures for geothermal systems, an estimate of investment costs and procedures for obtaining the required permits. Based on the research, proposals for technical solutions and suitable locations for the use of shallow geothermal energy will also be prepared.

According to the analyses conducted so far, the geothermal potential is more pronounced mainly in the northern and eastern parts of the Municipality of Velenje, especially in the Kozjak area and the wider areas of Škale, Škalske Cirkovce and Vinska Gora. This assessment is based on the analysis of the lithological structure of the area and the thermal properties of the rocks.

To further confirm these findings, three exploratory boreholes approximately 100 metres deep are currently being drilled in the settlement of Škalske Cirkovce. Experts from the Geological Survey of Slovenia will carry out a thermal response test, which will determine the thermal properties of the ground and key parameters for the design of geothermal systems.

The results of the research will provide an important professional basis for further planning of geothermal energy use and for the development of sustainable energy solutions in the Municipality of Velenje. The drilling of the exploratory boreholes is being carried out in accordance with the issued water consent and the permit for groundwater research, while also complying with the applicable legislation and professional guidelines for drilling in shallow geothermal systems.
