Every day, social workers travel thousands of kilometers to reach elderly people and persons with disabilities in their homes.

In the city of Bergamo alone, transport services for people with disabilities exceed 141,000 km per year.

The European project Green LaMiS is exploring how to make this “last mile of welfare” more sustainable.

By studying mobility patterns in Italy, Hungary and Croatia, the project highlights a crucial insight:

There is no single solution for sustainable welfare mobility.

  • Urban areas require route optimization and electrification
  • Mixed urban–rural regions require modal diversification
  • Dispersed territories require flexible and accessible solutions

Because sustainability in social services is not just about reducing emissions.
It is about ensuring access to care, continuity of assistance and human relationships.

A powerful reminder that mobility is also a social infrastructure.
