On Friday, the 6th Sponge City Talk took place, focusing on the Ljubljana pilot action. The main topic of discussion was Ljubljana’s new infiltration capacity map. Experts from GeoZS – the Geological Survey of Slovenia, including Janja Svetina and Joerg Prestor, demonstrated how precise hydrogeological data can support urban planning and enable effective stormwater management. They highlighted that reliable soil and groundwater data are essential for designing solutions that strengthen urban resilience to climate change impacts. One of the key conclusions of the panel discussion was the need to introduce standardized classifications into geotechnical reports and future legislation. It was emphasized that without mandatory requirements regarding the minimum percentage of permeable surfaces, building real urban resilience to floods and droughts will remain a significant challenge. The event also provided an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences with other initiatives:

  • Kristina Klemen from the IMZI Blue-green Infrastructure Institute presented the CLIMRES Project, which focuses on enhancing building resilience to climate change.
  • Mitja Janža presented the MARGIN Project (Interreg Alpine Space), emphasizing that groundwater management is not only a technical issue but fundamentally about protecting drinking water resources and ecosystems.

Among the concrete actions announced were the testing of Excel-based tools for infiltration calculations and plans to redirect clean rainwater from rooftops directly into the ground. We would like to thank all speakers and participants for their valuable contributions. The next steps within the MAURICE Network include further testing of the developed tools in urban practice, supporting the implementation of effective stormwater retention and infiltration solutions.
