As part of Project Activity 2.1, “Empowering Manufacturing SMEs with Skills and Resources,” on September 11, 2025, our Italian partner CONFEMI organised an in-person workshop dedicated to SMEs, entitled “Life Cycle Assessment, Circular Economy and Decarbonisation Strategies for SMEs.”

The initiative aimed to provide concrete support to SMEs that do not yet have structured processes in place for sustainability and decarbonisation, offering initial guidance on the most effective methods and tools to reduce the environmental impact of their production activities.

Through an informative, educational, and practical approach, the seminar sought not only to raise awareness among companies about the importance of the green transition, but also to transfer operational skills and methodologies applicable to everyday business practice. The goal was to guide SMEs toward greater environmental awareness by providing practical tools to assess and improve their sustainability performance.

During the workshop, several key topics were addressed, including:

  • Measuring environmental impact through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, useful for analysing the entire life cycle of products and production processes.

  • Corporate decarbonisation strategies, with particular attention to defining key concepts and planning concrete actions to reduce CO₂ emissions.

  • Circular economy, exploring how theoretical principles can be translated into sustainable and competitively advantageous business practices.

  • Overview of ISO standards related to environmental sustainability, as reference tools for managing and certifying business processes.

  • Regulatory and market aspects, focusing on VSME and environmental reporting as levers for transparency and credibility.

  • Communicating environmental commitment, offering guidance on how to effectively communicate results and actions taken, strengthening the company’s reputation and value.

The event represented an important opportunity for dialogue and learning for SMEs wishing to embark on a path toward sustainability. It promoted greater awareness of decarbonisation and circular economy issues while providing useful tools to competently face ongoing transformations and seize the opportunities offered by the green transition.
